CYCLING
In this third edition of La Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour.es, Huesca will become the first city to host the race for a second time. The capital of Huesca already hosted the departure of Stage 5 in 2024, which concluded in the Alto del Fuerte Rapitán in Jaca.

CULTURE
The Monastery of San Pedro el Viejo (Saint Peter the Old) in Huesca, is a 12th century Aragonese Romanesque jewel. Highlights include its cloister featuring sculpted capitals and its Royal Pantheon of Aragon. Its history and architecture make it a cultural emblem of the city.

SPORTS
The SD Huesca is the city’s most representative football club. Founded in 1960, it made it to First Division in 2018, marking a milestone in its history. With its passionate fanbase and the El Alcoraz stadium as its fortress, it continues to be a Huesca sporting benchmark.

GASTRONOMY
Huesca’s gastronomy stands out for its traditional dishes such as migas a la pastora (fried bread crumbs with various toppings), Huesca soup, chicken stew or the emblematic roast ternasco lamb. Local vegetables, such as thistle and borage, add depth to their recipes, while artisanal desserts, such as the Almudévar Plait and marzipan chestnuts complete its culinary offer.

FUN FACT
Built in the 12th century, the church and cloister of San Pedro el Viejo (or Saint Peter the Old) make up one of the most important complexes in the Aragonese Romanesque styles.

HUESCA PROVINCIAL COUNCIL
More than 150 years ago, in 1867, a blacksmith from Huesca was the first to make a bicycle on Spanish territory. Mariano Catalán was responsible for the creation of the Velocífero, which weighed more than 37 kilos at a time when grams and watts were considered irrelevant.
Today, over one and a half centuries later, the Province of Huesca holds a privileged position in the history of Spanish cycling and of La Vuelta. Great cyclists from Huesca have made their marks on La Vuelta’s history – particularly, Fernando Escartín. A native of Biescas, he finished second in La Vuelta’s general classification on two occasions, and is now the director of La Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour.es
The Huesca Pyrenees is far more than just a collection of possible cycling routes, it is a true paradise for extreme sports and for the enjoyment of nature, with the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park as its crown jewel. It is the tallest limestone massif in Europe, standing over 3,000 metres above sea level, and offering a unique setting in which to enjoy the landscape, its flora and its fauna.

CYCLING
Huesca has a special place in the history of Spanish cycling. Besides having amazing cyclists and impressive summits within the province such as Cerler, Formigal and Fuerte Rapitán in Jaca have written the history of La Vuelta and La Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour.es

CULTURE
Aínsa’s historical centre, declared a Historical Artistic Complex, is an example of the Province of Huesca’s vast artistic and cultural heritage. Nevertheless, this Pyrenean municipality forms part of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain Association.

SPORTS
The municipality of Monzón has given us numerous Olympic athletes. Perhaps, the most notable is Javier Moracho, considered the best hurdler of all time, who was a seven-time Spanish champion and obtained multiple medals in both European and World championships.

GASTRONOMY
One of Huesca’s most renowned gastronomic products is, without a doubt, the Pink Tomato of Barbastro – characterised for its large size, its pink colour and its somewhat sweet flavour, with very low acidity.

FUN FACT
1871 is the year in which the oldest grocery store in Spain, La Confianza, was founded in Huesca.
